Eye Care
Sight tests at Wade's
You will be asked whether there is any family history of eye disease. Some conditions can be hereditary and extra tests like Visual Field Testing or 3D OCT Imaging may be needed to ensure that they are not affecting you. Your optometrist will also ask about any medication you may be taking. Some drugs can specifically affect the eyes and further examination may be required to ensure that there are no problems. At the conclusion of your examination you will be given a copy of our results.
We welcome both private and NHS patients to our practice.

Children's eye testing
Without good vision children can suffer from enormous setbacks to their learning and development. Many children and parents do not realize that there is an underlying visual problem until they have been examined. We can give advice on children vision and eye health at any age. We recommend to check children’s eyes at 4 years old just before they start school. After this, an annual eye examination is recommended but there are circumstances where we may need to carry out examinations more frequently.
Here at Wade’s we offer a wide range of modern frames for young children through to teens. We also supply the specialised range of Tomato Frames for babies and younger children. We supply standard plastic lenses FREE with the NHS voucher although these can be upgraded to tougher, thinner, light reactive or specially coated lenses for an extra charge. We also provide sports specific spectacles and prescription sunglasses for children. We can advise on the most suitable lens options when the glasses are dispensed.
Warning signs of visual problems:
- Excessive blinking
- Sore/ red eyes
- Headaches
- Squinting
- Sitting close to the TV or holding books very close
- Poor performance at school
Children's Myopia Management
Because of this, interventions have now been developed to attempt to slow the progression and therefore limit the degree of myopia in this developmental period. The sooner these interventions are put in place, the more likely the prescription will be kept at modest levels.
Even with myopia management, your child may need a stronger prescription as they continue to grow so we recommend regular visits to your optician and keeping up to date with their latest prescription.

Digital Retinal Imaging
Visual Field Assessment
The test is carried out using a high tech Visual Field Analyser. You will be given a small handset on which there is a button. You look into the instrument, usually with one eye covered up, and simply press the button every time you see a flash of light. The results of these tests are analysed by a computer and then can be repeated over a period of months or years to detect any changes.
OCT Scan
We are always investing in the latest technology and are pleased to let you know that we have an Ocular Coherence Tomographer (OCT).
An Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT) is a specialist piece of equipment that is used to scan through the layers of the eye, including the parts that can’t be seen on a retinal photograph. The machine takes a series of snapshots of sections of your retina which can be combined to create a 3D cross sectional view.
Because of the detail and the depth element of these OCT images, they can help us to detect the earliest signs of some eye conditions.
Conditions that are more easily identified through the use of OCT imaging are:
- Age related macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic macular oedema
- Macular holes
